Wine Tasting 101

How to Plan the Perfect Winery Road Trip

Whether it\u2019s your first tasting room or your fiftieth, a little planning turns a good wine day into a great one. Here are the fundamentals our community swears by.

Time Your Visit Right

Most tasting rooms open late morning and close by early evening, often with a last pour 30–60 minutes before closing. Weekday visits mean smaller crowds and more time with tasting room staff, while weekends bring live music and events but busier bars. Always check a winery’s hours before you drive out — they change seasonally and around harvest.

Pace Yourself & Hydrate

A standard tasting pours roughly five wines, and those ounces add up fast across a multi-stop route. Plan two to three wineries per day at most, drink water between stops, and eat a real meal mid-route. Many tasting rooms will pour lighter for a group that’s clearly driving, so don’t be shy about asking.

Cluster Your Stops by Region

Wine regions cluster for a reason — terroir and travel time both favor grouping wineries within a 15–20 minute drive of each other. Pick one AVA or county per day, map the order to minimize backtracking, and build in a long lunch between the morning and afternoon sessions so palates (and drivers) can reset.

Take Real Notes While You Sip

It’s surprisingly hard to remember which Pinot was which by the end of the day. Snap a photo of the tasting menu, jot a quick note on what you liked, and rate each pour before you leave the bar. A few seconds of journaling per winery turns a hazy afternoon into a permanent record you can plan the next trip around.

Your Personal Wine Passport

Every winery you visit becomes part of your story. Rate each experience, jot down tasting notes about that perfect Cabernet, snap photos of the vineyard views, and watch your passport fill up state by state.
